Cyber Insurance

It’s not just businesses which need to protect themselves from cybercrime. Individuals are also at risk. This could be through an important email being intercepted by a fraudster, a virus infecting a home Wi-Fi system, or a ‘phishing’ scam.

There are several steps you can take to protect yourself and your family:

  • Ensure your home computer systems have up-to-date anti-virus software, with a functioning firewall and all other security measures enabled
  • Back up all your data on a regular basis, either to the cloud or a separate device
  • Use a different password for each of your accounts and change them regularly. Consider using a password manager
  • Think about using two-factor authentication where possible. This is where the website (for example, Paypal) sends you a confirmation code to your mobile. Be careful about what details you share online, especially on social media. Post your holiday photos when you get home, not whilst you are away
  • If you have devices connected to the internet, such as a webcam, ensure you change the default username and password

As well as this, we recommend a home cyber insurance policy, which will usually cover the following:

  • Damage caused by hackers, including restoration of data, professional assistance and removal of viruses
  • Online fraud and cyber theft of money, documents or deeds
  • “Phishing” attacks – the transfer of funds into another account through the theft of your financial login details
  • Cyber extortion  – for a ransom demanded following a cybercrime
  • Cyber liability – your liability in respect of unknowingly transmitting a virus, worm or trojan horse or failure to secure data

Please note cyber insurance for private individuals is not designed to cover small businesses or the self-employed, or family members not living in the UK.

A number of the household insurers we work with offer a basic level of cover for cyber insurance either as standard or it can be added on. Cover can include cyber fraud, ransomware, phone hacking, virus transmission, damage to home systems and costs related to cyber bullying.
