Yesterday, 23rd September 2019 Thomas Cook confirmed that all the UK companies in its group have ceased trading and as a result, all fights and holidays have been cancelled leaving customers stranded abroad and future trips cancelled. We appreciate the concern and upset people must be feeling.
Thomas Cook were part of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and hold the Air Travel Organisers Licence (ATOL) which provides some limited protection on certain types of holidays. In the UK the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) step in and deal with package holidays that include flights and hotel and are doing everything they can to provide transport to bring people back to the UK up until 6th October. Depending on where you are located the CAA will either fly you home on their operated flights or book you onto existing flights with other airlines. To assist those who have not booked a package holiday ABTA are running a parallel exercise. If you have a future trip planned which is a package holiday i.e. flights and hotel booked together, in the first instance you should try and obtain a refund under the ATOL scheme by visiting www.caa.co.uk.
If you have booked flights and hotels separate and have paid by credit card please contact your card issuer about a refund as you may be protected under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 Section 75. If you paid by debit or charge card again you should contact your provider for advice. If you used a travel intermediary or airline ticket agent they may have included travel insurance that includes Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance (SAFI) which will enable them to refund or cover the cost of a ticket to get you home if you are abroad.
