With the NHS coming under a great deal of pressure in terms of funding and staffing, research has shown how many younger workers believe that employers are being expected to step in and bridge the gap.
Around 58% of those aged 18 to 34 believe that government initiatives are pushing employers to assume greater responsibility for their workers’ health, with one such initiative being the Public Health Responsibility Deal. However, most workers still don’t believe that their employer has done enough to take care of their health.
Industry experts have stated that employers can take advantage of gaps in healthcare provision by offering access to care for those who need assistance. The provision of employee healthcare benefits can help to give workers peace of mind if they do have any health issues that need to be addressed. Additionally, the implementation of a wellness scheme could also be of benefit to both the employer and the worker, as it can help encourage a healthier lifestyle and potentially reduce the need for medical treatment. Some workers are offered private healthcare insurance as part of their contract of employment, while others can take advantage of free eye and hearing tests. Other workers can opt for lower-cost private healthcare insurance as part of an employee discount programme.
However, there appears to be a need for employers to ensure that older employees are made aware of, and familiarised with any healthcare benefits that are on offer – studies have estimated that only 39% of those aged 45 to 54 believe their employee healthcare provision is adequate. This figure is even lower amongst those aged 55 and over.
This means that employers are coming under increasing pressure to better cater to older workers, and ensure that they know what healthcare benefits are available to them, and better tailor healthcare benefits to meet their needs.
