Learning and Development

At Aston Lark, the Learning & Development Team are dedicated to making sure employees are given the right tools and opportunities to grow in their chosen career. With our Chartered status, we are committed to helping staff achieve professional qualifications, supporting not only those who are working within insurance broking but also those in other departments such as Marketing, Compliance, IT and Accounts. We work closely with the CII, with many employees achieving an Advanced Diploma in Insurance, enabling them to join a community of insurance professionals.

Within Learning and Development, we can guarantee that everyone is given the chance to fulfil their potential. To professionally develop employees, they must be given the correct tools, and at Aston Lark, that’s what we do. Not only do we offer the chance to gain a professional qualification, we also provide opportunities ranging from Apprenticeships, Mentoring, the ILM Programme, and a range of courses that are suited to your role.

We were proud winners of the ‘Investing in the Profession / Training’ award at the British Insurance Awards 2021.

ILM

The ILM programme supports the needs of our employees by developing their management skills, assisting them in becoming future leaders. We offer both the ILM Level 3 and Level 5, which are taught through self-directed learning, as well as joint learning with support from our cohort members. The programme has several benefits including increasing your motivation, skills and experience to take on a leadership role, and increasing your ability to contribute to the development of Aston Lark.

“The ILM3 course was tougher than I imagined but it was also much more enriching than I ever thought. I have made a good support network that I can turn to and have learnt things that I can apply to my everyday work and things that I can bank and revert back to when I might need them.”
Angela Miller, Assistant Manager, DA & Underwriting
“The ILM3 was a great course that gave me a real insight into the different parts of management and leadership. As a new manager it has provided me with much needed skills to deal with different scenarios that have arisen and allowed me to handle these more confidently.”
Joshua Meadowcroft, Manager, Private Clients

Mentoring

Our Mentoring Programme offers multiple benefits to support our employees. Through communication, honest and constructive feedback, negotiation, and setting goals, mentoring gives you the opportunity to discuss career planning, learn new strategies to balance home and work life, and network with others. Every mentee is given the chance to share and develop their knowledge, experience and skills through a programme which is based on trust, honesty and truthfulness.

“My mentor gives me perspective, and sometimes makes me think about things in a different way. It is great to have someone giving me advice who has been there and got the t-shirt. I get invaluable support whenever I need it and have gained a lot of knowledge about the business.”
Michelle Munson, Operations Manager, Commercial
“The mentoring programme that Aston Lark offers is a great opportunity. My mentor is helping me towards my goals and giving me guidance and advice on how to work towards a leadership role. I feel that my mentor will help me succeed, and having a mentor is such a benefit as I have that person to go to as well as my manager. Everything within your mentoring relationship is confidential.”
Daisy Bennett, Account Handler, Private Clients

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship programmes are a great route to take if you want to earn whilst you learn. At Aston Lark we offer the Level 3 Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship, which can lead to a number of careers such as client relations, insurance claims, and underwriting. You are supported by monthly coaching sessions which provide you with the skills you would need to one day pursue a career within the insurance industry.

“We found the apprenticeship scheme really helpful as we were starting out our careers in insurance. It enabled us to work together and achieve our Cert CII within our first year of being at the company which has really benefitted us now. It helped with integrating us into our teams and getting to know different people around the company. We would definitely recommend the apprenticeship scheme to anyone who hasn’t worked in insurance before who would like to develop in this area.”
Chloe Cattermole, Account Handler, SME
Rachel Carter, Assistant Account Handler, Private Clients

Professional qualifications

As part of our Chartered status, Aston Lark supports the qualifications that the CII offers. The CII aids those who aspire to become professionals within the insurance industry, catering for all levels of knowledge and offering the chance to gain a Certificate in Insurance all the way through to an Advanced Diploma. The flexibility of the framework allows you to study for units that are most suited to your current role, aiding you in your career in insurance.

Aston Lark also supports other qualifications suited towards Central Services employees. The CIPD increases the skills and knowledge of those working in HR; Marketing employees benefit through studying for CIM qualifications; and those working in Accounts are able to work their way towards a Diploma through the AAT.

“Aston Lark has always been very supportive of my professional development. By having the support of my manager, I have been able to dedicate work time to my qualifications by using study days and was able to complete my qualifications fairly quickly and efficiently. Aston Lark also provides the resources to make the achievement of qualifications easier through internal study workshops and having a range of colleagues at Cert, DIP and ACII levels, all on hand to provide any help they can.”
Bethany Read, Account Handler, Private Clients.
“Aston Lark has been really supportive about me starting my Level 3 CIPD; they have really helped me manage to balance my work and evening studies.”
Katy Potter, HR Assistant, HR.
