NHS volunteers insured with Aston Lark

Guidance for our Classic Motor Trade scheme clients on providing volunteering assistance during the Coronavirus outbreak

If you are an Aston Lark client who has signed up to provide volunteering assistance and you are using a vehicle insured through our Classic Motor Trade scheme with Aviva, it is their intention to provide cover use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes, without charge. This applies to any customer who uses their vehicles for non-profit/volunteering work to assist during the outbreak.

Guidance from Aviva

In response to legislative developments, the Aviva Commercial Motor Trade (CMT) policy includes a contractual provision for the use of company vehicles for voluntary work, setting out the parameters of such arrangements:

Where your Certificate of Motor Insurance includes use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes, your policy will cover any person entitled to drive, who you have authorised, to carry out voluntary work. Voluntary work is the use of your vehicle in connection with, or for the benefit of, charities, voluntary organisations, clubs or societies, where payment does not exceed the HMRC mileage rate in force at that time.

Cover does not apply to vehicles owned by, hired to or lent to any such organisation or vehicles that are used for hire or reward.

In the current climate, our customers may look to offer their vehicles and services to assist other businesses as a perceived voluntary service, which may not be catered under the heading of charities, voluntary organisations, clubs or societies parameters.  

We agree it is our intention to provide cover use for social, domestic and pleasure (SD&P) purposes, without charge, to any customer who uses their vehicles for non-profit/volunteering work to assist during the outbreak.

Criteria to non-profit/volunteering work:

  • No element of payment or reward, including payment in kind, other than fuel reimbursement at HMRC published rates.
  • Tasks directly relate to the provision of ‘Good Samaritan’ or health and welfare services arising from the outbreak.

Understand the Risk

Whilst it is not possible to envisage all circumstances, examples would include collecting and delivering shopping to those in isolation or the elderly; patient transfer for medical assistance or medical appointments; and a pub delivering free meals to vulnerable people.

If there is any payment or payment in kind e.g. to cover drivers’ wages, and even if it is for non-profit, use should be considered under an Additional Business Use.

 

Underwriting & Terms

Cover may be provided free of charge where work is undertaken for a voluntary organisation (Voluntary work is included as standard where use includes SDPP). ABI guidance and their commitment can be accessed here:

Note that Community First Responders and other ‘Blue Light’ volunteers are generally excluded from the volunteer drivers’ commitment.

 

Processes & Issuing Documents 

As above, volunteering activities fall within the SD&P cover provided under the policy and Standard Certificate of Insurance.

Therefore, there should be no additional documentation required.

If, however, there is no SD&P use shown on the certificate then please refer to Aviva for further advice.
